The Miracle of Lailat al-Miraj in Islamic History

Miracles do happen, and those who deny them are often unaware of the life of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Islamic history stands as strong evidence of these miracles. Lailat al-Miraj remains one of the greatest miracles granted to the Prophet (PBUH). It marked the night of his ascent to the heavens, a journey that was both spiritual and physical. This miraculous night highlights the elevated status of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the sight of Allah (SWT).

What Is Isra and Miraj? The Two Stages of the Journey

This blessed night is also known as Isra and Miraj, which refers to two distinct stages of the journey.
The first stage, Isra, describes the night journey from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. Angel Jibrael (AS) accompanied the Prophet (PBUH) on the heavenly steed Buraq. The Quran confirms this miraculous journey:

“Glory be to Him Who took His servant by night from Masjid-al-Haram to Masjid-al-Aqsa…”
(Quran 17:1)

This verse clearly establishes the truth of Isra and Miraj in Islam.

Miraj: The Ascension of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the Heavens

The second stage, Miraj, literally means “ladder” and refers to the ascension of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the heavens. From Jerusalem, the Prophet (PBUH) ascended through the seven heavens, meeting revered prophets including Adam (AS), Musa (AS), Ibrahim (AS), Isa (AS), Yusuf (AS), and Yahya (AS).

Upon reaching Sidrat-ul-Muntaha, Angel Jibrael (AS) stopped, as no creation could proceed further. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) alone was honored with divine closeness to Allah (SWT), a rank beyond human comprehension.

The Gift of Salah on the Night of Miraj

One of the greatest blessings of Lailat al-Miraj was the obligation of five daily prayers (Salah). Initially, fifty prayers were commanded, but on the advice of Musa (AS), the Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly requested ease for his Ummah. Allah (SWT), in His mercy, reduced the obligation to five daily prayers, while retaining the reward of fifty.

This event highlights the compassion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the mercy of Allah (SWT) upon the Muslim Ummah.

Quranic Evidence of the Miraj Journey

Allah (SWT) further describes this extraordinary event in Surah An-Najm:

“The heart did not doubt what it saw… He certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs.”
(Quran 53:7–18)

These verses reinforce the reality of the Miraj journey of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and refute all doubts.

The Purpose and Significance of Lailat al-Miraj

The journey of Isra and Miraj served as a declaration of the honored status of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Islam. It confirmed his unmatched position among all creation and demonstrated Allah’s supreme power.

Although the exact date of Lailat al-Miraj is not confirmed through authentic hadith, many scholars associate it with the 27th of Rajab, close to the period before Hijrah.

Why Lailat al-Miraj Matters to Muslims Today

Lailat al-Miraj stands as a timeless reminder of faith, obedience, and divine mercy. It calls believers to strengthen their connection with Salah, trust Allah’s wisdom, and follow the example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

This sacred night remains one of the greatest miracles in Islamic history, honored exclusively by Allah (SWT) to His beloved Messenger (PBUH).
