What Is Allowed and Forbidden While Fasting in Ramadan – A Complete Guide

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, during which Muslims observe fasting from dawn (Suhoor) until sunset (Iftar). Fasting in Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and drink, but also about self-discipline, spiritual purification, and obedience to Allah. To ensure that our fast is valid and accepted, it is essential to understand the rules of fasting in Ramadan, including what is allowed and what breaks the fast.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain righteousness.”
(Quran 2:183)

What Is Allowed While Fasting in Ramadan

Islam is a religion of ease. Many actions do not break the fast, and Muslims often have unnecessary doubts about them. Below are actions that are permissible during fasting:

✔ Brushing Teeth (Without Swallowing)

Using a miswak or toothbrush is allowed as long as toothpaste or water is not swallowed intentionally.

✔ Taking a Bath or Shower

Bathing to cool down, remove impurity, or for cleanliness does not invalidate the fast.

✔ Applying Oil or Lotion

Applying oil to hair or lotion to the skin is permitted and does not affect fasting.

✔ Accidental Eating or Drinking

If someone eats or drinks forgetfully, the fast remains valid. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“If someone forgets and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

✔ Using Eye Drops or Applying Kohl

Eye drops and kohl do not break the fast according to most scholars.

✔ Smelling Perfume

Smelling perfume or incense is allowed, but intentionally inhaling smoke should be avoided.

What Is Forbidden While Fasting in Ramadan

Certain actions invalidate the fast and must be avoided strictly during fasting hours:

✖ Eating or Drinking Intentionally

Any intentional intake of food, water, or medicine breaks the fast and requires qada (making up the fast later).

✖ Sexual Intercourse

Intercourse during fasting hours invalidates the fast and requires qada and kaffarah (expiation).

✖ Intentional Vomiting

If vomiting is induced intentionally, the fast becomes invalid.

✖ Menstruation and Post-Natal Bleeding

A woman’s fast is not valid during menstruation or post-natal bleeding and must be made up later.

✖ Smoking or Vaping

Smoking, vaping, or inhaling substances intentionally breaks the fast as it involves intake into the body.

Acts That Reduce the Reward of Fasting

Some actions may not break the fast but reduce its spiritual reward, which goes against the purpose of Ramadan:

  • Lying or backbiting
  • Using foul or abusive language
  • Arguing or fighting
  • Watching or listening to inappropriate content

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.”
(Bukhari)

The True Purpose of Fasting

Fasting in Ramadan is meant to purify the soul, control desires, and strengthen taqwa (God-consciousness). Along with avoiding what breaks the fast, Muslims should increase good deeds such as prayer, charity, Quran recitation, and remembrance of Allah.

Conclusion

Understanding what is allowed and forbidden while fasting in Ramadan helps Muslims observe their fast correctly and with confidence. Ramadan is a precious opportunity to seek forgiveness, improve character, and grow spiritually. Let us strive to protect both the validity and reward of our fasts.

May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and grant us steadfastness. Ameen.
